With all the hype surrounding the freestyle world tour it is easy to overlook the fact that there are some very talented Big Air and Wave riders amongst the girls.

With all the hype surrounding the freestyle world tour it is easy to overlook the fact that there are some very talented Big Air and Wave riders amongst the girls.

One such rider is the very humble Bibiana Magaji. Why humble, simply because it is not an easy job showing up to events knowing you play second fiddle to the freestyle riders, hanging around for the duration of an event, and then having to go home without even having had the chance to ride.

We ran into Bibi in Egypt, then in France and then in Germany and each time the wind failed to provide a large enough window for this big air specialist to show her talents.

Finally in China this week that all changed and Bibi took home the win.

The absence of freestyle from the IKA’s stop in Pingtan China might be a blow to them, but to the wave and Big Air riders, the absence of the ‘usual suspects’ gave the lesser mediatised elements of female kiteboarding a chance to shine.

Into the spotlight stepped Ines Correia from Portugal taking home the win in the woman’s wave competition and even managing to notch up second place in the big air.

You would think that a female kitesurfer with a Red bull sponsorship would be a household name, but there lies the difference between the woman’s side of wave riding and the men’s, however 2017 is set to be a year to change that as we have already seen the GKA add a woman’s event to their last wave riding event.

We just hope to see more and more from the female wave surfers over the coming months.

Back to the Big Air, and this was Bibi’s day, which she thoroughly deserved and waited long enough for.

Whilst Ines kept her honest by throwing some nice kite-loops, it was her huge board-offs and double spins which gave Bibiana Magaji the win with Ines Correia in second.
